Research projects

PROM

PROM (Program for Rationalization and Reduction of Food Waste) aims to examine the extent of food waste in Poland across the entire production chain – from “farm to table.” This is the first research initiative of its kind in our country. The results of the research will provide us with information on how we can counteract food waste.

The project is being implemented from September 1, 2018, to August 31, 2021, by a Consortium led by the Federation of Polish Food Banks, with partners including the Institute of Environmental Protection – PIB, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the National Support Centre for Agriculture, and the Polish Society of Food Technologists.

PROM consists of a research phase and a phase of preparation for application (the full project name is “Development of a monitoring system for wasted food and an effective program for rationalizing losses and reducing food waste”). The research and project results will be used, among other things, in shaping the National policy on reducing losses and food waste and in implementing IT solutions and procedures contributing to increased social participation of the food industry and local communities. Details are available on the website: https://projektprom.pl

The project is funded by the National Centre for Research and Development under the GOSPOSTRATEG program.

Local Governments Against Waste

For 25 years, Food Banks have been dedicated to rescuing food from being wasted and distributing it to entities supporting those in need.

The new project of the Federation of Polish Food Banks, implemented from May 2, 2022, to October 31, 2023, aims to increase the knowledge of local governments about actions to reduce food waste and the influence of non-governmental organizations on the creation of strategic documents at the local level. Through our initiative, we want to support social entities and local government units and present them with specific strategies, thereby promoting good practices proven in the field of combating food waste.

As part of the #LocalGovernmentsAgainstWaste project, the following activities will be carried out:

  • Social research in urban municipalities and urban-rural districts,
  • Two online conferences for local government representatives,
  • A campaign targeting all local governments in Poland, focusing on increasing the role of local governments in processes aimed at reducing food waste,
  • Work on projects for food waste reduction programs in collaboration with local government representatives,
  • Local educational campaigns “Two Weeks of No Waste” implemented in 4 cities in 2023.
